Finding balance in a busy life

Finding balance in a busy life

Having just recovered from a nasty gastric flu or bug, it makes me reflect on why I fell victim to it at this time. I personally don’t see much point in looking for causes in what I ate, especially when no one else around me is sick. What I search for is my emotional well-being, because I believe that our physical body is a map for our emotional body.

Sure enough – when I think about it, I realise that I’ve been very busy lately, fitting in as many Switch courses and private clients as I can before I go overseas for a month, planning my month’s trip, speaking at Charity Fundraiser galas, seeing friends, family and partner. And in all that, I have not spent any time at all just chilling out in weeks.

While I was sick, I spent two whole days lying on a deck chair in the sun – something I wouldn’t normally spend even one hour doing. It reminded me how important down time is. Even though I am now an incredibly healthy person by anyone’s standards (a particularly big achievement, given that I spent 11 years on an Invalids Benefit for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), I still need balance in my life. I am now healthy enough to work full time, go skiing, tramping, socialising, stay up late, travel… all things that would never have been possible previously, but everyone needs down time.

So I encourage you to take some breaks in your day to just sit and chill out, enjoy the sun and our warmer weather, flick through a magazine, strum your guitar, go for a stroll…. Maintain that balance of activity and rest that provides a foundation for good health.

Thankfully, due to my good general health and the use of The Switch techniques, I was able to recover in 2 days and avoided my doctor’s recommendation of admitting me to hospital (yes, I was pretty sick!) But if your general health is not good, search for what is out of whack in your emotional being. My experience in my own life and in my clients' lives is that people store 'stuff' all over their body which makes them ill. When they resolve it, they are significantly healthier. I have seen clients resolve thyroid and goitre problems when they release the secrecy of the things they were never able to speak of, or resolve bowel problems when they are no longer holding onto something from the past. Using Neuro-Linguistic Programming therapy is a good way to quickly get to the heart of an issue and release it gently.

Another technique I would like to share with you is a very simple one that you can use yourself. Whenever you notice yourself getting too fired up during the day and the adrenaline cogs are starting to turn, stop... take 3 really long slow breaths... spread white calming light from your crown all the way through your body... when you feel at least an 8 out of 10 calm, hold your thumb and forefinger together to hold onto this feeling. Your subconscious will learn from repetition so that after a while, as soon as you hold your thumb and forefinger together, you will immediately feel calm. Using this consistently throughout the day is a good strategy to maintaining longer lasting and stable energy and health. It won’t resolve underlying stuff but it will help you to relax and improve your general well-being.
